Synopsis:
Throne of Glass by Sarah J. Maas is about Celaene, an eighteen-year-old girl who survives in a salt mining slave camp. She is soon brought to the castle of the ruling king and told she will compete to be his Champion. In return, she will gain her freedom. The first book in an eight-book series introduces the reader to the main character, Celaene, and gives little information about her past. The book also starts to tell the history of the land and how magic disappeared when the King took over.
Genre: Fantasy
Strengths
Writing Style: I will always get sucked into anything that Maas writes including this book. The author is an amazing storyteller giving plenty of detail and description without making the story drag on. I absolutely loved the writing style in this book and was able to get lost in the reading rather than thinking “Am I there yet” or “When is the fun going to start”.
Variety of plot: Although this book is about her competing in the trials, the entire plot is not about only the trials. I would even say that the book gave us small updates on the trials rather than becoming repetitive. I found that most of the book was about Celaene learning about the history of the lands and building relationships with secondary characters which gave the reader important information for the next book.
Strong Female Character: Celaena is an amazing main character. She has gone through a lot, but she is not some damsel in distress. She can fend for herself, reflect on her past, and still enjoy the small moments. I like that she does not constantly put herself down; she is always pushing her mind and body to fight for her freedom.
Weakness
Disappointing ending: Personally, I wish the ending had been more thrilling. This book's ending wrapped up suspicions and gave important information for the next book. While I do think this is very important (especially for the first book in a long series), I expected more.
My Recommendation
I would absolutely recommend this book. If you enjoy straight-up fantasy/fiction (there is no magic) then I would recommend this book to read. If you are more into magic I would still start the series, although this book does not have magic there have been hints that there might be magic later on in the series (keep a look out for my other reviews).
